Legend has it that Bertha Benz, who was the wife of inventor Karl Benz, took the first trip in an automobile over a longer distance. She decided to test her husband’s invention, the patent Motorwagen, which resembled a bicycle and carriage, and drove 105km (65 miles) to her visit her mother. On her way, she is thought to have made several adjustments in order to make the vehicle function better, inventing brake lining in the process.
